In 1964, a group of friends, all craftsman bakers, formed a co-operative called North Western Bakers. As many bakers were too small to purchase the minimum orders stipulated by suppliers, they decided to buy a pallet of goods and split it between them, sharing the saving. The company’s beginnings were humble, delivering to bakers on one old wagon based on New Hall Lane in Preston.
As time passed, more and more bakers appreciated the benefits that buying together in bulk could offer in terms of price savings and the company grew from strength to strength as more of them joined the co-operative. After a period based on Fitzgerald Street, the company moved to its present site at Roman Way in Preston in November 1982.
To acknowledge its close links with similar bakers’ co-operatives in other areas of the country, the company changed its name to BAKO North Western in 1998, and the BAKO Group of five independent, yet co-operating companies, was formed.
Today our customers enjoy the combined purchasing power, logistics and resources of one of the largest distributors to the industry, supplying a wide range of major brand names plus the value and quality of BAKO Own Label products.
When a new or existing customer contacts BAKO North Western to place an order or to enquire about our services, a large professional team springs into action to ensure they receive the best possible service and attention to detail.
We deal with calls from over 2,500 customers every week ranging from small cafes to large bakers and from specialist restaurants to leading, national hospitals all requiring that professional, yet personal service.
Whilst the majority of our customers are contacted by telephone, we also regularly receive orders and correspondence by fax and e-mail.
Many companies would see the initial customer call as just another function in their operation, but here at BAKO, it is the starting point of an extremely customer-focused process, developed to provide the customer with the best products available on the market, at the best prices and all supported by our friendly, professional and efficient customer services team.
The first contact you are likely to make at BAKO North Western, is with our dedicated Customer Services team. The Customer Services Department works closely with other departments including the Sales Representatives, the Purchasing Department and the Utilities Division, providing a complete sales team dedicated to achieving customer satisfaction. At present we have 15 trained customer services executives making up our multi-skilled team, who are solely responsible for ensuring your experience of dealing with BAKO is both easy and rewarding. The team are on hand from 7am - 6pm each working day, offering you a ‘one stop shop’ for all goods and services.
Our Customer Services staff are on hand to deal with all your enquiries. They are fully trained in all the areas, ensuring they can deal with your enquiry promptly and efficiently. The dedicated and knowledgeable team are able to take orders or direct enquiries to relevant departments, providing a swift answer to any request, no matter how unusual it might be.

The Sales Representatives are an integral part of customer care, each having the facility to transmit your order straight to BAKO utilising their laptop computers. In this way, they will always have up to date information about your account on hand when they visit you.
To ensure our customers receive the best products available, we prepare and evaluate new products in our fully-equipped Test BAKORY. This facility enables us to prepare and bake products in a controlled environment, ensuring that the items are of the quality required to match our, and our customers’ high expectations.
The Test BAKORY is also utilised throughout the year for product demonstrations, product development, food tasting, open days and customer workshops. All demonstrations are attended by key BAKO North Western staff, who may meet our customers and ensure they can optimise their sales from the best new products available on the market. The BAKORY is also regularly used as an internal or external training facility
